Mesothelioma Cancer

Mesothelioma Cancer

Mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer affecting the membrane lining of the lungs and abdomen.
Malignant mesothelioma is the most serious of all asbestos-related diseases. Exposure to asbestos is the primary cause and risk factor for mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma Cancer

Making a correct mesothelioma diagnosis is particularly difficult for doctors because the disease often presents with symptoms that mimic other common ailments. There is currently no known cure for mesothelioma, but treatments such as surgery and chemotherapy can help to improve the typical mesothelioma prognosis and even increase one's life expectancy.

Three major types of mesothelioma exist and they are differentiated by the organs primarily affected. Pleural mesothelioma (affecting the lung’s protective lining in the chest cavity) represents about three-quarters of all mesothelioma incidence. Peritoneal mesothelioma, which affects the abdominal cavity, and pericardial mesothelioma, which affects the cardiac cavity, comprise the remainder.

There are three recognized mesothelioma cell types. Between 50% and 70% of all mesotheliomas are of the epithelial variety. While prognosis is generally poor, it is considered less aggressive than sarcomatoid mesothelioma and biphasic mesothelioma, which comprise the remainder of cell-type diagnoses.

The cavities within the body encompassing the chest, abdomen, and heart are surrounded by a membrane of cells known as the mesothelium. Mesothelial cells assist in general organ functions. The mesothelium is particularly important to organs that are commonly in motion, such as expansion or contraction of the lungs, stomach, or heart. Lubrication from the mesothelial cells allows free range of motion within the body. The mesothelium of the chest, abdomen, and cardiac cavity are called the pleura, the peritoneum, and the pericardium, respectively. Each of these groupings of mesothelial cells is extremely critical to the functions of the body structures which they encompass.

Malignancies (cancerous tumors) occurring within the mesothelial membranes are known as malignant mesothelioma, or simply mesothelioma. Benign tumors of the mesothelium are known to occur, but are much more rare than malignant mesothelial tumors.

While tumors of the mesothelium were first recognized in the late 18th century, it was not until the middle of the 20th century that this particular cancer was studied and examined with more detail. It was at this time when suspicions of the cancer’s causal relationship with asbestos exposure became more substantiated. A joint research venture through the Department of Thoracic Surgery at the University of the Witswater and Johannesburg General Hospital in South Africa provided the most compelling evidence of the nexus between asbestos exposure and the development of pleural mesothelioma.

Incidence of mesothelioma is still quite rare, with only 2,500-3,000 diagnoses in the United States each year. There was a spike in reported diagnoses between 1970 and 1984, which has been attributed to the latency period between diagnosis and the height of industrial exposures, which occurred roughly 40-60 years prior to this time. While exposure was common across the United States in nearly all industries, it was particularly prevalent in the WWII-era military industrial cycle, including navy shipyards.

Minnesota Mesothelioma Lawyer

Minnesota Mesothelioma Lawyer
MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota - Mesothelioma lawyers from the national asbestos litigation firm of Levy Konigsberg LLP (“LK”) are continuing to help Minnesota mesothelioma patients and families obtain legal compensation from companies who manufactured, sold or used asbestos-containing products.
Each year thousands of men and women are diagnosed with an asbestos-related disease such as mesothelioma, lung cancer, or asbestosis as a result of their unnecessary exposure to asbestos and asbestos-containing products.
Due to the presence of numerous industrial employers throughout Minnesota, powerhouse workers, insulators, steel workers, plumbers, laborers, electricians, pipefitters, chemical operators, machinist, boilermakers, engineers and many other trades were routinely exposed to asbestos on a daily basis at their places of employment.

Minnesota Power Plants (Minnesota Mesothelioma Lawyer)

Between the 1930’s and 1970’s, as many as twenty-six power plants were established throughout Minnesota. The generation of power in MN required the use of large, high-temperature equipment. Boilers, furnaces, turbines, cooling towers and ovens were installed, maintained and repaired at these power plants. This equipment required large amounts of asbestos-containing products to properly function. Other products, including pumps, valves, motors, wire, cable, heaters, air conditioning units, gaskets, packing, chillers, and steam traps were necessary to allow the powerhouses to properly function. Individuals working at these Minnesota power plants were exposed to high levels of asbestos dust from their work with or around these products.

Minnesota Mesothelioma Lawyer

Minnesota’s industry between the 1930’s and 1980’s included manufacturers and producers of farming equipment, paper, foundry materials, automotive accessories, beverages, oil products, petroleum, construction materials, cleaning chemicals, industrial chemicals, and other everyday consumer products.
Individuals in Minnesota employed at these worksites performed the backbreaking work necessary to make these companies successful without knowledge of the serious health hazards created by exposure to asbestos at these worksites. Mesothelioma lawyers at LK have the expertise necessary to carefully analyze your work history to identify the unique asbestos exposures that were present at your previous places of employment.

Minnesota Mesothelioma Lawyer

In MN, and across the country, many people also developed mesothelioma from non-occupational asbestos exposures, such as automotive work, home renovations and other hobbies, or from “second-hand asbestos exposure,” which occurred when work clothes contaminated with asbestos were worn home. An experienced LK attorney will assist your family in determining all possible sources of your exposure to asbestos dust.

Asbestos is a deadly mineral that has been used in thousands of products. When microscopic asbestos fibers are inhaled or ingested, they can cause a number of diseases, including mesothelioma and lung cancer. Of the diseases caused by asbestos, mesothelioma is the most aggressive, attacking the internal lining of the lungs and abdomen. Mesothelioma typically does not develop until decades after the asbestos exposure occurred.

How Our Mesothelioma Solicitors Can Help You

In most cases, people develop mesothelioma through being exposed to asbestos at work. Employers should protect workers from coming into contact with hazardous substances; if they have not done so in your case and you are suffering as a result then you can apply for compensation. Even if you no longer work for that employer, or the company no longer exists, you may still be able to claim.
We believe every client has the right to seek compensation to make life a little easier in these very difficult circumstances.
We are also very mindful of the fact that it is hard enough to come to terms with having this disease without also having to go through any stress related to finding good quality, expert legal advice. Lawyer Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a deadly and excruciatingly painful form of cancer caused by asbestos exposure. It has no cure. Symptoms typically do not appear for 10 to 50 years after exposure, and many victims are not even aware that they have been exposed.
The mesothelium is a protective lining around the lungs, abdominal organs, and heart. Mesothelioma is a cancer of this lining. The most common type, pleural mesothelioma, affects the lining around the lungs and is often confused with lung cancer that can also be caused by asbestos exposure.
Once mesothelioma is diagnosed it progresses quickly. Most patients are given less than a year to live. Medical advances are being made against the disease and some of the latest treatments offer a much greater life expectancy, but you must be in the early stages to benefit.

        Pain
Mesothelioma is an unbelievably painful disease. Pain management makes up a large portion of treatment. Patients should not hesitate to seek medical relief for their pain and to tell their doctors when pain relief is no longer effective. Minimizing the pain increases the efficacy of treatment and helps to maintain the best possible quality of life. Unfortunately, most patients will finally reach a point where nothing can keep the pain at bay.

        Asbestos
Asbestos is a heat and fire resistant substance that has been use in thousands of products since the late 1800's. Health risks of asbestos exposure were documented as early as the early 1900's but heavy use of the substance did not begin until the 1940's.
The majority of mesothelioma victims are people who have worked with asbestos in industries and environments such as:
        • Mining
        • Shipyards
        • Railroads
        • Oil refineries
        • Automotive manufacture and repair
        • Demolition
        • Small appliance manufacturing
        • Construction
        Lawyer Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is not contagious, but the families of workers in high risk industries are also at risk for exposure because of the asbestos brought home in workers' clothing. If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, anyone who lived in your household at the time you were exposed should be tested as well.
Asbestos has been used in thousands of construction applications, and is very common in older homes. An asbestos product has been made for virtually every part of a house you can think of, including:
        • Flooring
        • Insulation
        • Ceilings
        • Paint
        • Wiring
        Lawyer Mesothelioma
In addition to the house itself, many household items contain asbestos.
        Asbestos exposure today

Since mesothelioma symptoms take decades to surface, most of today's cases stem from exposure that was long in the past, but asbestos exposure is still happening today. People who live in older homes, especially those why choose to renovate, are at an elevated risk for exposure. Workers in many industries still work with the toxic substance in alarming amounts every day. An unacceptable number of schools still contain asbestos, putting our children, teachers, and administrators at a constant risk for exposure. While a good deal of asbestos is sealed and contained an accident or catastrophic event can quickly set asbestos free.

        Mount Saint Clare, circa 1920
Ashford University  campus was established in 1893 as the Mount St. Clare Academy, a boarding and day school for girls. The idea for this school formed when Father James A. Murray invited the Sisters of St. Francis to help teach in Clinton, Iowa. The new Mount St. Clare building was erected for this school in 1910 and remains in use today.

Seeing a need for higher education in Clinton County and the surrounding area, the sisters founded Mount St. Clare College in 1918. This liberal arts institution was also an approved teacher education college from 1932 to 1954. In 1942, 60% of the rural teachers in Clinton County and 62% of the teachers in the city of Clinton school system had received all their training from Mount St. Clare College.
         Ashford University
In 1950, the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools first accredited Mount St. Clare College. The college then began to expand quickly, and acquired a convent building, new library, new gymnasium, the Science Building, and Durham Residence Hall. The college eventually became coeducational in 1967.
         Ashford University

For the 1979–1980 school year, the college received approval for its first four-year degree, a bachelor’s program in business administration. During the same year, Mount St. Clare Academy merged with St. Mary’s High School in Clinton, forming Mater Dei High School (now known as Prince of Peace Preparatory). With the space freed by the academy’s merger, the school began to offer additional four-year programs. In 1997, the sisters moved off campus into their new mother house, The Canticle. In 1998, the Durgin Educational Center was opened, which included new athletic facilities, including Kehl arena.
